Q.

Sleep issues

My baby sleeps very little during day (two hours at most)...almost three months old and feeds 4 hourly...he just had an UTI infection (took antibiotics) but has not slept well since he was two weeks old....at night not alot better..wakes up many times....He also refuses to fall asleep without being in my arms..then I put him down but will wake in 3o min max...could something else be wrong or is this a habit that was formed due to the infection making things difficult....what can I do to get him out of this habit? I just cant see a baby surviving on this little sleep? Am I creating bad habits also by holding him to fall asleep?

Something is obviously worrying your baby to cause this degree of sleep disturbance in such a young baby. It is not due to teething now and his recent UTI has been treated. Boy babies who develop a UTI must always be very carefully investigated to make sure that their urinary system is normal, so an Ultrasound of this sytem is essential.
Your paediatrian should also asees your baby for any other possible reason for his sleeping problem such as a blocked nose or colic or lactose intolerance.

I have been to paed and she has said that it was the UTI infection and now a habit was formed..which I cant believe? He does not cry all the time though like a colic baby though....how would I know if he is lactose intolerant? (Currently on Lactogen) He does bring up a bit of milk but nothing that I thought is serious...could it still be reflux? My mother and everybody tells me it will get better but it just seems to fluctuate between not as bad and very bad. No problem with Urinary system as this was examined (sonar) at 4 weeks....he had a lot of gas and stomach blew up...long story but in end they did a biopsy for Hirsprungs that came back negative....do I just accept the sleeping problem ...what do you think?
