Skin off

Last week I saw that the skin was peeling off my 2 yr old son''s one finger, at the tip. Now all his fingertips'' skin has come off and his toes are starting as well. I don''t think it is painful, but he tries to hide it, like he is self-conscious about it. So, at first I thought he was actually biting it off, but now that the toes are peeling it is obv an infection? What cream or ointment can I use? How infectious do you think it is?

Thank you so much for all your guidance and feedback. I really appreciate it.

Kind Regards

You are very welcome.Peeling of the fingers and toes is very common in young children after certain illnessses. The most common is a recent strep infection [the usual bacteria that causes tonsillitis] Another possibility is a virus infection called hand foot and mouth disease but you would have noticed the rash in and around his mouth at the time. The third possibity is an illness called Kawasaki's disease. Here children are rather ill and have a very high fever and a very red mouth and tongue. If he is well and has not had a recent fever all is well and you can just apply a moisturiser such as Epimax junior to his fingers and toes. If he has had a fever recently it would be best to ask your paediatrician to see him.
