Similac Alimentum causing gas

My 16 week old is breastfed, but I need to supplement his feeds with two formula feeds when I am at work. I tried Nan HA, which gave him a stuffy nose, eczema, cramps and gas. I have cut out all dairy products in my diet, as this also has an effect on him.

I have slowly started introducing him to Similac Alimentum, which took forever to track down! As soon as he began drinking it, his winds have increased and he passes a lot of really smelly gas. He is also struggling with cramps again. Is this normal when introducing a new formula, or is it time to try a soy-based formula? If so, which soy formula would you suggest?

I have also read that soy formulas contain high levels of phytoestrogens, which may affect infant growth patterns. What is your opinion on this?

Thanks for your input.

Similac Alimentum is an extensively hydrolysed and modified cow's milk that is usually recommended for highly cow's milk allergic infants. It is very rare indeed for a baby to have a reaction to this formula. It certainly seems that your baby is indeed highly allergic to cow's milk as shown by his reaction to the NAN HA formula. The soy formulas are indeed a popular substitute formula for cow's milk allergic infants. Phytoestrogens in soy formulas have been extensively studied and are considered to be safe, but this evidence is not with complete 100% certainty.
Your best and safest option would be to express your breast milk for your baby while you are away at work.
