Granddaughter 3, refuses to use any toilet. When she can no longer hold in, she asks for a nappy and then she would wee. She has had serious problems with constipation and has seen numerous doctors. She is not afraid of the toilet because she would sit on the toilet and simulate wee-ing and flushing but never does actually wee, although se says that she has. She holds it back until she no longer can, then she says it hurts - if she does not get a nappy she would wee in her pants. She seems petrified when you try to coax her at the toilet. She is at a nursery school and does the same there. She will hold for hours on end. Could this have something to to with bowel problems as this is very difficult and painful for her.

We have considered some form of therapy. Please help.

Your granddaughter is having a difficult time with toilet training. Give her a full 10 days break with not a word said about potties or toilets, just time off. This applies to the school as well. She must wear training pants not nappies. After the 10 days are over every time you see the warning signs take her to sit on the toilet. Encourage her to sit on the toilet every day, sitting after mealtimes is a good routine to try. When she is on the toilet keep on encouraging her. If she gets something right praise her a lot. Even if she does nothing you need to still praise her for sitting on the toilet.Don't rush her,as she becomes more mature she will start to get things right.
