Q.

Seretide

Hi Prof,
My daughter is on the seretide pump - she is 17 months old and has had a phlemmy chest for months now followed by occasional wheezing. The doc put her on singulaie and zyrted as well as seretide. She was behaving strangely so i took her off all except the seretide pump as her allergy test came back not very high and no food allergies. I use the saline spray 3 times a day. She seems to be much better but still has a bit of a cough in the morning and evening but i figured that was because the pump is 12 hr action so by the nearing of the end of the12 hours she started coughing. She had the rsv virus and got bronchial pneumonia. Is his cough normal until the rsv virus works out of her system. Her paed said that it would take between 6-8 weeks and she had it 5 weeks ago.

Your little girl is being treated on asthma medicines but does not have asthma. She does does not appear to be an allergic child. She has a problem known as 'recurrent viral wheezing'. The RSV virus is the most common cause of these episodes. Each episode can last for about 6 weeks. She is on the correct treatment for this condition which she will outgrow. Continue on the Seretide twice daily and nebulise her with saline as you have been doing.
