Q.

Sand paper like rash

Dear Doc

Can you perhaps suggest the cause of a fine sandpaper like rash? All 3 my children had it now while on holiday but none of them were in anyway ill. I think it might be due to the dry heat and chlorine in the pools. The rash flared suddenly and seemed to ''burn'' them causing significant pain. The burn is now gone but they still have this rough sandpaper feel to their skin. It was on the trunk and limbs. Worse on trunk.

They did not have any cold/flu or any other illness. In future what would be the best soothing ointment to put on?

Thank you

You have given a good description of your children's rash. The important thing is that they have not been ill because one important cause of a sandpaper rash is scarlet fever.Fortunately we can rule this out. This leaves a much more common cause especially if your children have been well and that is a heat rash.No treatment is needed for heat rash usually, but you can apply a good moisturiser such as Epimax cream if their skin is dry and a bit itchy. The rash will clear up by itself.

Doc my 3 1/2 yr old daughter has a slightly itchy rash that feels like sandpaper but it isn''t red,(wouldn''t know it was ther if you didnt feel it) no fever or sore throat just a small amt of diarrhea. She doesnt feel bad in the least little bit but all internet research says scarlett fever, but she only exhibits the rash in texture not in color. Could this be caused by anything else? An allergy possibly ?
