Safe method to remove some ear Wax

The Doctor has told me that my 1 year old son has a big blob of wax in his left ear, thefore he is unable to see the ear drum as I think that he might have a ear infection. Is there a safe remedy of removing this blob of war, cause if it does not clean up he wants me to take him to the ENT for them to suck it out. I do not use ear buds. My son now sticks his finger in his ear as it is sore, I am wondering if this is pushing the wax in further.
Please help me!!!

There are wax softeners which are available but the safest for a baby would be sweet oil.Ask your chemist for this. The sweet oil must be slightly warmed before use and one or 2 drops put into the ear where the wax is causing a problem.
