Q.

Runny tummy

Dear Doc
My daughter will turn 3months on Friday, she''s feeding on Isomil. Since last week her tummy is very loose and crampy, she''s has about 5 runny poo nappies per day for the past 6 daysand her tummy appears to be crampy. Reason she''s on Isomil is that at home there''s history of lactose intolarance and her 2 year old sister was intolerant to lactose and suffered from eczema. What could be the cause?

The most likely cause of your baby's loose stools is that she has developed an allergy to her soya formula. If her sister has eczema it is likely that she [her sister] is allergic to cow's milk rather than being lactose intolerant. So there is probably a family history of allergies. About one third of babies from allergic families who are fed on soya formulas become allergic to soya.Try her on a low allergy cow's milk formula such as NAN HA first. If she still has loose stools she will need to go onto an extensively modified formula such as Similac Advance Alimentum.

I forgot to mention that feeding suggestion on Isomil for her age is supposed to be 6 bottles of 180ml but she''s taking only 3 bottles per day, how can I get her to take more? Her current weight is 5.7kg and her birth weight at 38wks was 3.06kg
