Runny nose

Hi Dr, my son is 10 months old and has had a runny nose for nearly a week now. I gave him betnesol N drops for 5 days which seemed to dry it up a bit, but now that he is off the drops we are back at square one. He isnt coughing or anything, just a terrible nose run, and a bit of a blocked nose when he goes to bed at night, is there anything i can give him to clear this up??

Your baby has a cold which is caused by a virus infection. This usually takes 5 to 10 days to clear up by itself. You have been given a strong cortisone and antibiotic nose spray. The antibiotic in the nose drops is called Neomycin which cannot help for a virus infection like a cold. The cortisone in Betnesol N is called betamethasone. It is the incorrect treatment for a cold and is absorbed from the nose into the baby's body. All you need to use is infant saline nose drops twice daily such as Salex nose drops. This will relieve your baby's blocked nose and is safe.
