Q.

Risperdal (4yr old)

Hi Doctor,
My son is 4yrs old and under guidance of an OT who did an assessment and found that he is healthy and on par for a child in his age group, but extremely impulsive and hyperactive at times. The creche finds it a bit distracting. His pediatrician asked us to complete a parent and teacher questionnaire to determine maybe a temporary medical intervention. She''s mentioned Risperdal depending on the outcome of the questionnaires. I am very concerned about these products as well as Retalin. Can you please give me some advice? Thank you

I would not be at all keen about putting your young son on Risperidol now. While most children tolerate this medicine quite well it may lead to drowsiness, increased appetite, anxiety and agitation. He is still young and a clear diagnosis needs to be made before labelling him as having ADD or ADHD.He may just be an exuberant little boy.He certainly should not be considered for Ritalin either. It may be best to ask a paediatric neurologist for an opinion although this could probably be put off until he is 5 years old in order to allow time to see how he gets on over the next few months.
