Q.

Ringworms

Dear Prof

Are ringworms contagious because my 2 yr old son had them and now my 5yr old daughter has developed one on the chin?
I gave them both vermox (SD). I just read in one of the posts where you say you do not recommend th SD, can you explain why, so that I am more informed. Also, please recommend a topical cream. Is grinding teeth a sign of worms or is a coincidence that my son has just started grinding his teeth as well?

Ringworm is very contagious. Ringworm is due to a fungal infection of the skin and is not due to worms. The treatment is a cream called Canesten cream which is applied twice a day until the rash clears up. Teeth ginding is a habit which is very persistent. The cause is not usually obvious but is not due to worms.Vermox SD is not recommended for children 2 years and under. There have been reports of convulsions in young children who have taken this form of Vermox and this is under investigation. I am still awaiting confirmation that it is safe to use in young children.
