Returning to normal routine after illness

Dear Paed

During this stomatitis episode, my son slept in bed with us and mostly on top of me (I am almost 7 month preg, so was not pleasant). To compound matters I injured my back last week, and it has not healed due to having to carry sick LO around the past week. I thus cannot bend down to put him in his cot or pick him up again at this stage. What would be a good strategy to get him back into his cot?

You obviously cannot pick your son up now. His Dad should be doing this not you.You simply cannot have your son sleeping on top of you now.One option may be to put a mattress on the floor next to your bed and let him sleep there. This should only be for a short time until he is more ready to sleep in his own bed again. Otherwise you need to make him feel important and a 'big boy who sleeps in his own bed and encourage him to sleep there.

Shame. You''ve got it tough at the moment. I hope your back feels better soon and that your son is on the mend too.

What about an interim measure like putting a mattrass on the floor next to your bed for a week or two to give your back a chance to heal before you try the cot.
I like the step idea, he might feel like quite a big boy going up into the cot like that. Another option is to ask your husband to do bed time duty until you have baby, as he''ll probably have to step in and do bed time duty with your son thereafter, it might make a good transition time, as at the moment, you can still go and pat your son a bit before he falls asleep.

Shame Racoon - I feel very sorry for you! Both my sons weigh a lot (9kg 5month old and 19kg 2 year old) and I also have constant back pain.. Why don''t you put a small stepping stool in front of his cot and learn him to climb in by himself (I assume his old enough) - just take it away at night so he doesn''t injure himself. Good luck!
