Q.

Restless nights

Hi Doctor,

Please give me your thoughts on restless nights. My son will be 2 in September and only sleeps through once a week if we lucky. He has actually had this problem since he was born i thought it would get better with age but it hasn''t. He even wakes up if he comes to our bed and sometimes he wakes up with a fright. Could it be nightmares?

This is rather common in children of this age. Your little son has developed the habit of waking and his main aim is to get into your bed. He may also be having night terrors on some nights, but this is not the reason for him waking virtually every night. When he comes to your bed you should immediately take him back to his bed, tuck him in and kiss him goodnight and leave the room. If he starts to cry you will need to try the controlled crying method [see on Google]This is not at all easy but if you want to break this cycle of waking this will help the most.
