Reflux in 4 year old

Son suffered from severe reflux until he was 18 months. (Lots of vomiting as well as great discomfort. He needed grommets and battled to sleep, and had recurrent chest infections). All other symptoms have improved. Now he is nearly four - he continues to wake every night, (I thought out of habit) but often he coughs and cries out, and then swallows and swallows. There is no sign of a slight cold or a post-nasal drip. Do you think it he could be refluxing. Should I have him checked out?

Yes, it is indeed possible that your son still has a relux problem. You describe his symptoms very well.Other causes for his present symptoms such as asthma also need to be looked for. It would be a good idea to take him to be seen by his paediatrician.

I have the same problem Nicci, and my son is also nearly 5.I took him to my Pead about 2 months ago,he said that its possible but not def.Said that their is a test that could be done, but he needs to be hospitalized, they take a sample of the eusophagus to see if its been affected by severe acid, and so on!
I also thought my son will outgrow it,and he was always a bad sleeper, also starts coughing and swallows alot.Theirs always a lot of fluids in his throat, and after the reflux episodes he gets throat infections.
He uses altosec, takes it with a bit of yogurt and it helps alot, but now the Pead also said that its ussual for kids his ae to get post nasal drip and " croup" ,and it could also be that. But my instinct says its reflux!!!!!!!!!
Pead said he will also be coughing a lot during the day if it was reflux. He did nt seem confinced!
Its really difficult,i walked out of his office feeling like i m overeacting, paranoid parent!
I dont know really what to do,if he s fine on the altosec,he has to use it for the rest of his life, reflux doesnt go away,it turns into heartburn!Same thing.

Many thanks for your advice. What should I expect the paediatrician to look for. ( It helps me a great deal to have a sense of what should be covered in the examination.)
