Dear Doc

Hope you are doing great. Son 20 months started refluxing in Feb. He is on Losec and motillium since then but with little improvement. During Easter holidays we went to visit my parents in Limpopo, I was with him full time for 11 days and the reflux stopped. Since we came back in Gauteng ( Vaal Triangle) his reflux is back 10 x worse. His Nanny told me she gives him bread and tea during the day which I never do. Do you think it might be food allergy? I took him to his paed yesterday and he wants to refer me to a surgeon. He said there is no connection between reflux and food allergy.

Certain foods such as wheat and milk in food allergic infants can certainly aggravate reflux. In fact there is a well recognised condition called 'eosinophilic oesophagitis' which is usually due to a form of cow's milk allergy. Try your son on a strict wheat free diet first for at least one week and see if he improves. If this does not help try a milk and dairy free diet for 1 week and again see if this helps.Substitute dairy with soya milk and soya yoghurt.
