Q.

Reflux

Hi dr
My 5 month old daughter has reflux and is on Losec Mups. She’ s doing well on this treatment. However, this past weekend I suspect she had a flare-up and we had 3 bad days of discomfort, causing her to be very unhappy &  also she also struggled to sleep. Whatever was bothering her, have luckily now resolved itself &  she is back to her normal happy self. I don’ t think it’ s her teeth bothering her, although she is drooling excessively. What can I do or give her when she experiences a flare-up of her reflux? I have got some Gaviscon Infant sachets (from the UK) at home –  can I give this to her in addition to the Losec? How / when do I give it to her?
I also have another question: she is breastfed, but I also give her a bottle of NAN AR in the evenings, as well as 3 x teaspoons of cereal x 2 per day. I give the NAN AR to her to help fill her up in the evenings (and I also hope this will help with the reflux?). I would like to continue breastfeeding and will also soon be substituting the evening cereal with vegetables. When she turns 6 months, will the breast milk, 1 bottle of NAN, cereal and vegetables provide her with enough iron in her diet or do I need to give her any supplements? I don’ t currently give her any other supplements.
Many thanks!
E.

Your baby's recent symptoms do suggest that she had or has some acid reflux still. You can add half a sachet of gaviscon to her bottle feed. She has settled down again so adding any other treatment is not required.
Your baby is getting a good diet and will get enough iron.
