Re: very pale 4 yo

Dear Prof

He has a 2 cm tonsillar gland, which luckily is not an isolated gland. Had reticulocyte count done, and it came back normal. Very relieved about that! But, that still does not explain the chronically enlarged lymph node and hoarse voice. His throat, ears and nose are clear and he is on Avamys. I am giving him Allergex, in stead of Allecet or Deselex, as it has become too expensive with 3 kids on antihistamines. I have read that kids with FG syndrome have unexplained immune issues, so do you think it could be that, even though he most likely has a very light form of FGS if he has it at all? How do we treat it?? He certainly can''t have antbiotics every month as he did the last 6 months. I am planning to ask for a test to determine whether it is a bacterial infection each time he gets sick before any antibiotics are prescribed. What else can I do to boost his immuun system? the only supplement he gets is Omega-3.

The only way to find out why your son has a hoarse voice is to ask an ENT specialist to examine him. There are many causes of hoarseness in young children especially those who have been on or had inhaled cortisone I would not give your son Allergex as it is an old fashioned sedating antihistamine that interferes with concentration and learning.
Allecet is a safe generic of Zyrtec and is reasonably well priced.
It would be worthwhile giving him Scotts emulsion as an immune booster. You will be able to stop the Omega 3 if he uses Scotts emulsion.
