Re post 992 - dairy allergy

Dear Doc

Had my son at the paed this morning, as he vomited again last night even though on soy formula. He has URTI and pulmonary obstruction (wheezy) which the paed said was most likely due to a viral infection. She suspected that the bit of cheese he had with dinner and/or the plegm from the URTI together with the coughing is what made him vomit, so he''s being nebulized with Duolin and his Deselex upped to 3.5 ml day for 5 days. His paed only wants to test him at 2 years, so we''re doing a dairy exclusion diet (as you suggested). I just want to ask which other formula can he have, should he also become soya intolerant as I guess thats also a possibility with dairy allergy? Also, looking at his history, he was born at a good weight, and then did not pick up weight well at all after I stopped breastfeeding at 6 months (he''s now 15 months). In fact his weight went down to the 10th-25th percentile and is now still between the 25th and 50th percentile, even though his height is at about the 60th percentile. Could this be due to a dairy allergy?

You may need to use rice milk if your little son is not able to tolerate soya. The other alternative such as an amino acid formula called Neocate is very expensive. His weight could simply be a family characteristic ie tall and slim men in the family or could reflect his milk allergy. Incidently your baby can be tested for allergies now there is no reason at all to wait until he is 2 years old.Allergy tests can be done from birth onwards.
