Q.

Rash

Dear Doctor

My daughter is 8 weeks old. A week ago she developed a pinkish/ redish rash. It appeared to start on her neck and behind her ears. She was usually damp behind her ears when she woke up (I thought that this was due to perspiration).

The clinic Sister said that she probably had roseola and said that I should not be concerned. However, when I took my daughter back to the clinic today, the Sister changed her mind as she said that a roseola rash should have disappeared by now. She now thinks that my daughter has eczema.

She told me to apply SBR Lipocream to my baby' s face and behind her ears, Epi-max plus to the rest of her body, and to bath her in pure glycerene soap. What worries me is that the Epi-max jar says that the product should be used with caution on children younger than 12 years! My baby is 8 weeks!

Am I doing the right thing by following this advice? Should I see a Paediatrician? I am so worried that I am applying creams etc that are not suitable for babies!

Please will you advise?

Many thanks
Syl

Paediatrician

I don't think that your baby has eczema. This sounds like a skin condition which is common in babies called seborrhoea. The creams that you are using may aggravate this rash. As I can't be completely sure about the diagnosis without being able to see your baby,it would be best to see your paediatrician. If it is seborrhoea it can be very successfully treated.
