Dear Doc, is it safe to breastfeed whislt preggies. I just discovered that im pregnant and my 18month old is still breastfeeding. I have read some stuff on internet searches that the milk produced may not be safe as it is concocted with hormones which may have an effect on the breastfeeding child.

You certainly can continue to breastfeed your 18 month son while you are pregnant.

As the paediatrician says, its quite safe to breastfeed while pregnant.

At about 20 weeks your milk changes back to colostrum - which is rich in antibodies and a wonderful health boost for your toddler.
Some toddlers don''t like the taste though and choose to wean themselves at this point, others happily carry on feeding.

You may wish to contact an organisation such as La Leche League who can answer your questions in detail, where you can meet other mothers who have breastfed through pregnancy and you can learn about tandem feeding - feeding a newborn and toddler.
