Q.

Pneumococcal vaccine

Dear Doc

What is the current Pneumococcal vaccine given at 8 weeks? My clinic sister says Prevenar that used to be given in the past, is no longer given as there is a new vaccine (not sure of the name now) that protects against 13 strains. She said that Prevenar plans to introduce a 13 strain vaccine in the future.

Please will you shed some light on this?

Many thanks
Sam

Presently the Prevenar pneumococcal vaccine protects against 7 pneumococcal strains. The plan is to introduce the new Prevenar pneumococcal vaccine that protects against 13 strains, but I am not sure when this is going to be available here.
