Please advise...

Hi Doc
My son, 4 years old, was circumcised a year ago. Since then he has been really sensetive there . He does not allow me to wipe him after his bath and says its sore. He also presses and pinches his penis often.

He wee''s normally and he is basically a happy boy. Could he have an infection, or is it more serious.

Please help.

This is a rather unusual complaint. It is probably nothing to be concerned about and does not seem to be due to an infection. It may be a good idea just to ask your doctor to have a look and see if there is anything obvious that could explain his increased sensitivitity.

WJA, why dont you tell this woman that you are the world expert on foreskins even though you have no experience at all with a foreskin??

AD, your does your son have any memory of being circumcised? Based on how much foreskin was left over the glans, he may well be very sensitive and when in the hot bath water, it certainly will feel more sensitive if the remaining foreskin is pulled back. It will feel less sensitive over time. Have him pull the remaining foreskin back when going pee. That will keep the glans as exposed as possible and lessen the sensitivity

The reason men are born with a foreskin covering the glans (head) is to protect the glans from rubbing and chafing against clothing, being exposed to harsh soaps, etc. Removing the foreskin permanently exposes the glans to the environment, which it was not meant to be exposed to.

The sensitivity of his glans will in time reduce to more tolerable levels as the skin thickens and becomes less sensitive. This loss of sensitivity will increase through his life.
