You have made the correct diagnosis.Hyperkeratosis pilaris is a common inherited skin condition. It usually disappears by the late teens. It is difficult to treat.Heat aggravates the small bumps. Avoid alkali soaps and only use Dove soap on your children's face. Apply Epimax cream at night. The bathwater must not be too hot.It may help to give your children extra Vitamin C daily.
