Q.

pflegmy cough and antibiotics

Dear Doc,

My son (19 months) was diagnosed with tonsillitis and throat infection Friday night. He also had (still has) an awful productive cough with a slight wheeze although the GP wasn''t concerned with it too much. She prescribed Augmentin 600 (4 ml twice a day) which we started on Friday. He hasn''t had any fever since Fri, but his cough is still awful. He is also cutting his 2 upper molars. I am a bit concerned about his cough as it doesn''t seem to be improving? When should the antibiotics start clearing it up? Is there anything we should be looking out for?

Thanks for your input!

Your son almost certainly has a viral infection and it sounds like he has bronchiolitis. This is usually caused by the RS virus in this age group. The cough can last for 3 weeks or longer. Antibiotics do not help for this illness as it is caused by a virus. Keep your son's nose clear with saline nose drops or spray and give him Mucospect syrup to help him to clear the mucous from his chest.
