Persistant cough cont.

Thanks for your reply regarding my daughter. I agree that she has a post nasal drip and that a saline spray will help. However she also still has coughing and throat clearing episodes that can last for half an hour or more. Apart from being unpleasant to her it is not acceptable in a classroom, and also makes it difficult for her to fall asleep. Is it ok to give Demazin to dry up the drip while her immune system sorts out the problem?

Your daughter probably has tracheitis as a result of the persistent post-nasal drip with the viral upper respiratory infection she had recently.Tracheitis is an inflammation of the trachea or windpipe and this takes long time to heal after a viral infection. It often helps to give a short course of a safe cortisone such as Prelone syrup for 5 days. Other medicines do not help much. You can try the Demazin syrup if you wish, although I am not very happy about giving children medicines containing phenylephrine.I really want you to use the saline nasal spray which is much safer.
