Penicillin for ear infection

My paed is away so I took my 13 month old daughter to my GP today, anticipating that he would say she just had a cold (as I have just had one), but he said her one ear is " slightly pink"  so he prescribed penicillin (can''t remember the name but its 125 mg amoxillin and purple). Is penicillin necessary for a slight ear infection ? I have read that they often clear up on their own. I''m just worried because my little one is at creche and this is her 3rd ear infection in 9 months and I would really like to avoid grommets and also the use of too many antibiotics.

The antibiotic prescribed is probably amoxycillin. There does not seem to be a good reason why your little girl needs an antibiotic at this stage. Keep her nose as clear as possible by using Salex nose drops twice daily so that her ears can drain naturally through her eustachuian tubes which open into the back part of her nose.
