Peeling toe nails

Hi dr
My 14 month old daughter''s toe nails are peeling off quite badly, there''s quite thick pieces coming off. What could be the cause of that? We have just returned from 2.5 weeks in the UK where she wore closed shoes &  socks the whole time - could it be because of that?
Thanks so much!

There are several possible causes for a very young child to have peeling skin on their toes. This may occur after a bacterial infection such as scarlet fever or a virus infection such as hand foot and mouth disease . Fungal infections can also cause this problem. It is also very possible that excessive humidity such as would be encountered in the UK winter and the effects of wearing socks and closed shoes may well be the cause of your baby's peeling toes.Apply Vaseline to her toes and see if this heals the peeling skin after a few days. If the problem continues please take her to be seen by your doctor.
