Q.

Oros

Hi doctor, My son started a wheezy chest since he was 3 weeks old. He is now 2 and on chronic asthma meds. singulair, Flixotide and duovent. For the past 3 months he has been coughing and wheezing non stop. It gets worse and better, but never goes a way. About a week ago I stopped giving him any oros and a few days later his chest cleared complety. Is this coincidince or is there a relation between oros and asthma? I have also figured that he canot drink milk or eat yoghurt and he has been happy having soy for the past 2 years.

You have made an excellent observation. Oros contains both sulpur dioxide and benzoic acid as preservatives. It is usually the sulphur dioxide preservative that affects children with asthma. Keep your son off Oros and also any other foods preserved with 'sulfites'
