Q.

Not teaking breast

Hi Doc, my daughter gave birth on 24 Oct, 3 weeks prem but our boy is healthy, 3.5 kg. He is very relaxed but for some reason he does not want to take her breast. We do give some Nan in a bottle but that is not our aim. He is sooo hungry but does not want to take. She has got enough milk, it is streaming out and it seems to be real milk, not " colostum" (sp).
What can we try?
A greatful granny

There may be a reason for your new grandson not latching onto the breast such a your daughter possibly having inverted nipples for example. As your daughter is really battling to get her baby to latch on to her breast,it would be best to go to her nearest baby clinic for advice.

This is the daughter in question  thanks for your replies. I just wanted to give some feedback:
I''m happy to say that with the help of a dedicated granny, we''re doing much better now. We weaned him off the formula and although we are all still learning, we have more good feeds than problems. He''s making lots of nappies and seems to be doing well.

Please ask you r daughter to visit your nearest breastfeeding clinic asap. Do not give him formula, as her milk production will decrease. Exactly what do you mean with he will not take the breast? Does he not latch at all??
