Night Waking

Hi Professor,

My 1.5 year old is getting up often at night. I have changed his bed from his cot to a bunk bed with his 4 year old brother. He climbs out of the bed and comes to my bed more than 10 times a night. The only way I can get him to sleep in his bed is to give him another bottle. He had 3 bottles last night. I was trying to wean him from his bottle as I thought he was waking for that. I diluted the full cream fresh milk with water but he would not drink it. I don''t want him to sleep in my bed as this will set a precedent. The controlled crying method will not work with him as he simply gets out of his bed. I don''t want him to go back into the cot as he must learn to sleep in a big bed.

If I keep leading him back to his bed, do you think he will eventually get the message? Any tips on getting him off the bottle at night?

Thank you for your time, I am sure you are tired of getting this type of question!

This is indeed a very common question. The usual advice is to do exactly as you are doing. Take him back to his bed every time he appears at your bedside. He must not be allowed to sleep in your bed which is obviously his aim now. Do not give him 3 bottles at night at his age. The last one should be at bedtime. If he wakes up crying he must still remain in his bed. It will be a battle to get him to realise that his frequent wakings are not going to be rewarded any more. He will eventually get the message.

Oh good gracious, you really do have it bad. try the toddler gate at the bedroom door and then try sleep training. Good luck.

Hi Purple,

Thanks for your comments. My Jack-in-the-box also climbs out of his cot........

Perhaps he really is just too young to be in a bed yet.

You could try putting a toddler gate across the doorway so he can''t get out.

personally though, I''d put him back in the cot and let him learn to sleep in a big bed when he''s more ready for it.
