Q.

New Mom - Worried

Hi,

My baby is 6 days old.
She has very very loose stool. Looks like diarrhea. The Paediatrician said it is normal if I am breastfeeding.

I am a little concerned and would just like a second opinion.

This is perfectly normal for a breastfed baby.

It is quite normal.

Breastfed poo is a mustardy yellow colour (though can even be khaki or greenish), very liquid and can even have little white things in it that looks like seeds.

Up until around 6 weeks of age, baby should do 2-5 poos a day, each at least the size of a R5 coin - all should be liquid. Baby should also wet 5 or 6 nappies a day (6-8 if they are cloth though). After 6 weeks some breastfed babies poo much less frequently - once a day, once a week, once every 2 weeks - its all fine - the poos are still liquid. Even on solids, the poo is firmer, but constipation is rare.

The poo you describe sounds perfect for a breastfed baby of that age.
