Q.

My daughter is overweight - help!

Hi Doc,

My daughter is 6 and turns 7 in November. She is 124cm tall and weighs 31kg. I feel she is overweight - is this true and if so, roughly what would be an ideal weight for her? My problem is that my mother looks after her during the day while i am at work and i' m not sure how often Granny ' spoils'  her with sweets and other treats...

Your daughter is very tall for her age.Her height is in the top 10% for girls of her age. This means that her weight should be in balance with her height. Her weight is certainly well above the average for her age and falls in the top 10% for girls of her age. When I calculated her BMI(body mass index) she is definitely in the overweight group and carries too much body fat.An ideal weight for her is 25 Kg.
