Hi Doc,
My 3.5 yr old complained of a sore neck yesterday morning. It seemed to get worse during the day, but he was better last night, and today much better, but still holding his head to one side. I have not sent him school.
There is no swelling or redness or fever, or anything that would tell me immediately it is mumps.
I have given him panado for pain, and he''s resting more than playing. He''s eating well.
Could it be that he''s just sprained his neck? He was fine on Sunday, and only complained on getting up yesterday morning?
If it is mumps, how should I treat this?
He is up to date with ll his vacs.
Many thanks, R

There are a lot of children with mumps this year, but if your son has had the MMR vaccination he is unlikely to get mumps. You do not notice any swelling of his neck or one side of his face and he does not have a fever so this also makes mumps unlikely.I agree with you that your son probably has sprained the muscle/s in his neck. This usually takes a day or two to heal but is very painful. So he will need Panado for the pain.
