Mood dysregulatory dysorder

Dr my son has just turn 6yr old...He has bad moods, crying alot when not getting his way, shouting being VERY rood and aggressive(verbally)....I spoke to a psychologist regarding this matter....I even thought he had ODD, but according to her she seldom makes a diagnosis of ODD in children and listening to his history said that she thinks he might have mood dysregulatory dysorder! She recommended that I take him to a psychiatrist! She said that Rispadyl will help him alot. I was very upset to think that my son might have bipolar! Is this something to take serious or can I wait a bit and see if it will get better by itself?

Your psychologist has mentioned that she thinks that your son has a mood regulation disorder. While it is recognised that children with bipolar disorder may fall into the category of mood dysregulation disorders, this is not the only possibility by any means. It is most important to first exclude conditions such as ADHD, ODD [which your psychologist should be diagnosing] and Autism syndromes. I agree that your son probably should be seen by a child psychiatrist [not always easy to find in this country] or get a second opinion from an experienced child psychologist.
