Q.

Mom coughs up blood-worried 4 my kids

Hi Doc

My mother in-law came to live with us and she has been coughing up blood lately, she has sharp pains in her chest, complains of head aches and her blood pressure is on the higher side (150/90).For the last 3months she has been seeing a doctor who says she has mild pneumonia and put her on several antibiotics, pain killers, vitamins etc, an x-ray was taken but doc said its ok for her age (80yrs). She has not improved at all. Now am very worried about my children who spent a lot of time with her at home, are these symptoms contagious to my kids? What can I do to avoid them getting sick, the youngest is 19months and the older 11years and they are all coughing and sneezing now.

Regards Tinta

It is unlikely that your mother in law's illness is contagious. At her age the most likely cause of these symptoms is heart failure. She should be properly diagnosed and then given the correct treatment. It would be a good idea for her to get a second opinion.
