Q.

MMR and ITP - sibling vaccination

Dear Paed

My eldest son developed ITP about 3 weeks after he had his MMR vaccination. He recovered quickly within 3 weeks, although it was the longest 3 weeks ever...My younger son is now due for his MMR and I''m ofcourse worried that he might also have the same adverse reaction. What is your take on this situation?

I can see why you are concerned.ITP has been associated with the MMR immunization but this is very rare indeed. The chances of this occurring are less than 1 in 25000 cases. It is highly unlikely that your younger son would also develop ITP after the MMR.
