Miserable 2y old

Dear Dr,

My LG of 2 is extremely miserable this past week. She recently (2weeks back) had her 2 year check-up at the peadiatrician, and he was very happy with her. She is suddenly crying all the time, and cries to be picked up and carried around. She has a very poor appetite but does not seem to be teething. Only her second set of molars are not out yet, but the gums are not even swollen the slightest bit yet. She has grommets, but is not fiddling with her ears, or complaining about it. She has a very dry, barky cough at night only, and only for the past 2 nights, but not at all during the day. She has no fever, but sometimes does feel cold and sweaty when I touch her. She does not seem to have pain anywhere specific, but I' m also not sure. I don' t know if I should rush her to the paed again, which will most probably only result in 5 days of Orelox, or just leave it a bit longer. I’ m not sure what it could be or what to do with her? Could you please give me some advice.

Thanks so much.

You have listed and excluded most of the likely causes that would make a previously happy 2 year old suddenly become miserable. She seems to have a mild viral infection probably a laryngitis as she has a barking cough at night. She may have some flu symptoms as well at this time such as muscle pains and possibly a headache. Give her Panado or Calpol for pain and fever and see that she drinks well. If she does not improve after 48 hours she should be seen by her doctor.
