Q.

Meningitis

Dear Doctor

There has been a lot of coverage lately in the media regarding meningitis.

Is protection against meningitis included in the 8, 12 and 16 week vaccinations received at clinics, or is there a dedicated meningitis vaccine?

My daughter has just received her 12 week " six in one"  vaccination (she also received this at 8 weeks, and will receive it again at 16 weeks. Is she protected against meningitis?

Many thanks!

Your daughter is not specifically protected against meningitis. She should also receive the new Prevenar [pneumococcal] vaccine and also a specific meningococcal vaccine. Speak to your paediatrician.
