Q.

Meningitis

I would like to know how do they check if a child has meningitis. My 5 year old son has been complaining since the weekend about headaches, there is no other sighs just that. But I am really worried, should I take him to the doctor, do they do a blood test. I am really worried.

Headache is one of the symptoms of meningitis especially when the headache persists. It would be best to see your doctor. The diagnosis is based on the doctor finding certain clinical signs of meningitis.

Dear Naomi,

My baby of 8 months had meningitis approximately 6 weeks ago. Another symptom to watch out for is very high fever. Should the blood tests not be conclusive, your paeditrician would advise a lumbar puncture. All the best, I truly hope this is not the case.
