Medicine is not working

Hi Doc

My LG who is 5 months old has what I think is a cold. Her nose is extremely snotty and she is coughing. No other symptoms. No fever at all, in fact the last time I took her fever it was 36.6.

I took her to the doctor on Friday, 3 August 2012 and he said it was viral and gave me some nose drops to dry up the post nasal drip, flemeeze for the cough and panado.

Since then nothing has improved. She is still coughing alot, and her nose is constantly running and whenever she sneezes everything comes out. There was some blood in her mucous this morning.

Is there anything else I can give her? Is she too young for Tussitot, I found that it really works well for my other daughter.

Thank you

Your baby girl has a bad cold and also a chest infection. The most likely cause is an RS virus infection. This usually lasts for 7 to 10 days and then starts to improve. As long as your baby can feed normally and is able to sleep all is well. Keep her nose clear by using Salex nose drops twice daily.Get a nose suction device such as Nosefrida from you pharmacy and suck out the excessive amounts of mucous blocking her nose. Do not give her Tussitot.

A viral infection can take up to 2 weeks to get better. Perhaps call your doc to make sure, but if she has no fever, I would not worry too much. My boy had the flu a few months ago and he was ill for 2 weeks, then go better. Not much you can do about viral, but wait it out. Sorry! Call your doc though, your baby is still very small, so you want to be careful and sure!
