Q.

Mattress for newborns

My wife is due in a few days time. We bought a camp cot and a separate " Breathe Ez"  mattress to fit in the cot. I have heard that a newborn baby should not sleep on a mattress for the first 6 months, but on the standard (hard) foldable mattress that comes with the camp cot. Is this true?
Please elaborate.
Thank you

Firm mattresses are recommended for newborn babies as a firm mattress is thought reduce the risk of SIDS [sudden infant death syndrome]A fitted sheet can also be pulled tightly around the mattress so the sheet cannot be sucked into the baby's mouth in the first 6 weeks of life when they are not able to raise their head by themselves.
