Hi Doctor, we have a baby girl of 22 months, she weighs 11.5kg, and we are going to the kruger national park over the easter weekend. Firstly is it relatively safe in your opinion to go, if we protect her with Malanil peadatric medication, and protective clothes, and tabbard etc etc, or will you advise in not going at all ?
I phoned the park and their last case of malaria was in november. Also the doctor and his family there don''t even take any medication, and believe it''s safe to go. Any advise will be apprecaited. Regards, Cecil Meyer

This is a difficult question to answer. The park is in a malarial area. It may be a safe time to go but the risk of malaria is always there. The World Health Organisation [WHO] now recommends that children under 8 years of age are not taken into a malarial area unless absolutely necessary.Malanil is good malaria preventer medicine but like all medicines is not free of side effects. Careful mosquito bite avoidance measures are essential from dusk to dawn.
