Malaria - 13 month old

hi. i want to make double sure.... my baby is 13 months old, health is good, weight 10.3kg, vaccinations are all up to date. we want to go on holiday with grandparents, its near the game reserve. they are going to be just out side komatiport. i have heard that the kruger national park is a malaria area. is it alright to take my 13 month old baby there? if ok, will she need any malaria precautions before we go and how? i dont want to take her, if malaria is bad. would you please advice?

There are no really safe malaria prevention medicines for babies of this age. The WHO in fact warns against taking babies and children under 8 years to malarial areas unless absolutely necessary. If you do take your baby you will have to rely on avoidance of mosquito bites only which means full mosquito nets for sleeping, the use of anti-mosquito skin sprays and burning anti-mosquito pads in the bedroom.

Hi Chants,

I took my 5 month old to Malelane, near Komatiport. He was too young to give prophylaxis to so I smeared him with AMB Citro cream and always had him covered up. He slept with a mosquito net on. This was in winter though, when it is cooler and not so many mosquitos about. I also had a mosquito plug in his room, the fan was on and I burnt mosquito coils outside.

Have fun, it is a beautiful area.
