Lump on his neck

Hi doc
My son is 3 years old, and his had a lump on his neck on the right side, below his ear not on his neck, the paed told me its nothing worry about, but i notice sometimes the lump looks begger than other times, sometimes u cant even notice the lump.
Is it something to worry about,please help.

The lump you describe here is probably an enlarged lymph node.This kind of swelling usually results from a previous ear or throat infecton.If your son was under 2 years I would not be at all worried about this swelling but at his age and especially because you mention that the lump changes in size it would be best to ask your paediatrician to see your son again.Your paediatrician must inform you if he/she thinks that this swelling is a lymph gland or not, whether there are other swollen lymph glands present in your son's neck and what the likely cause is for this lymph node enlargement. Also you should be informed as to whether it is necessary to do any tests to confirm his/her diagnosis.
