Low appetite

Afternoon doctor

My son (11 months) was sick for the past 3 weeks - firstly hospitalised for ear infection, then hospitalised for rota virus and then on antibiotics for middle ear infection.

He wasn' t a big on eating before all the illness, but he at least ate enough. While he was on the antibiotics for the last middle ear infection he had an appetite like I' ve never seen before. I was so glad, because he was eating very healthy. We finished the course of antibiotics and he now refuses to eat anything but yogurt. He doesn' t eat any of his veggies and he has never liked meat or chicken. He doesn' t eat egg. I' ve also tried 2 minute noodles, but with no luck.

I may add that he only drinks room temperature formula. I dont think he is teething, because his gums is red and not swollen. A first sign of teething was always a very soft stomach, but his stools are solid.

Please, I need your advice as my son cannot live on yogurt. What must I do? Mealtimes are really a massive headache.

Thank you for your help and advice, it is appreciated.

This is very common after a child has been ill especially with one illness after another. Make sure that his nose is clear as he will not be able to eat or indeed taste food if his nose is blocked. Use Salex nose drops to clear his nose if it is blocked.Give him an immune booster such as Scotts emulsion. This will also improve his appetite. He will only like soft foods now so try only foods he likes and only one food at a time. Don't force him to eat. He will eat what he needs. Be very patient and his appetite will return.

Why dont you try the purity range for 10months, its not so bulky, my son now has a ear and throat infection due to the teething, I think partly its due to the medication, as well as the throat being sore and probably on fire.
He has rooibos tea, formula, yougurt and purity and cereal (cerelac, I must admit I like it
Thats his normal diet only the last 2 months have I slowly been introducing table food, so he eats on and off but now with the infections he is basically covered. So long he is drinking formula and yogurt it should be fine, start introducing slowly the solids like he first started.
I still think it could be teething, my son has once in a blue moon a very runny tummy but normally its a firm stool when teething.
Oh and my son is almost 10.5months.
Hope it come right for you
