Q.

Loose Stools: What could it be?

My twin girls (7months old) have both been passing slightly formed stools that look like scrambled eggs, are a bit slimy and foul smelling. They are on cereal in the mornings, fruit (banana/ pear/apples) for lunch and I' ve recently added veggies as their supper (sweet potatoes/ butternut). They drink Lactogen 2 and breastmilk. Could this be diet-related or perhaps an indication of teething? This has been going on for about 10 days now. I give them Reuteri drops and Rehidrat. Should I be giving them anything else, in addition to the above remedies?.

Your twins rather loose stools may be due to a food intolerance. It is unlikely to be butternut or sweet potato even though these are the most recent foods you have introduced. They may be reacting to the fructose in the fruit they are eating. It would be worthwhile trying them off all fruit for a day or two to see if this is indeed the cause. If they do not improve the next suspect is likely to be wheat in their cereals. Only give them rice or maize cereals.
