My almost 6 month old is currently on treatment for Nephritis (BP 121/71) Nephrologist put him on Enalapril 1mg dly, Folate 2.5mg dly and Vidaylin 0.6mls ( Wt 6.5kgs) - commenced on 24/10/09. Since this week he has had a loss of appetite, normally would drink around about 750mls a day(since birth would not drink anymore) , now drinking approx. 550mls. He is on Isomil 180mls . He was slightly constipated but am giving him Prune juice stool is returning to normal. He is not on solids yet as i was told to wait til 6 months due to the Nephritis - what can i give him for the loss of appetite . Should i consult his Nephrologist as i was doing with the constipation? Birth wt was 3 kgs but struggles to gain wt easily even when taking feeds well.

You need to be cautious about introducing solids to your son's diet but he should be able to start on a rice cereal now. He should also be able to safely eat Purity apple and pear or similar product. Speak to your paediatrician as you really need to work closely with him/her as your baby is very young to have acute nephritis. The Enalapril may be interfering with his appetite and also causing constipation as these are possible side effects.
