liquid intake

Hi dr. my baby girl is 11 months old and has been exclusively breastfed from the start. She eats very well during the day, but my problem is that I struggle to get her to take any liquids. She only breastfeeds 2 -3 times at night but during the day she will just take a few sips of water. I want to wean her soon but I am worried that if I stop breastfeeding she will get almost no liquids. She does not like bottles and will drink from a sippy cup or normal cup fine, but she will just take one or 2 sips at a time. Is this a problem and how can I get her to take more liquids?

You have not mentioned your baby's weight, but at her age she needs about 120ml per kilogram weight per day. Your baby does not appear to be drinking enough. Taking an average weight for a baby girl of 11 months she needs a minimum of 1020ml per day. Always offer her milk before her solids.

I got my baby to drink properly from a sippy cup by giving her fruit juice. At least this tasted good.
When she drank this fine, I added water till about half juice, half water and I also started giving her rooibos tea.

Also had the problem that she only drank breastmilk. At 11 months I took her off breastmilk and started normal milk in the sippy cup too - after explaining to her that mommy don''t have more milk.
She took the whole milk first night! But she still (21 months) only drink milk at bed time or first thing in the morning.... rooibos during the day and fruit juice or cooldrink is a treat for weekends.
