Q.

Lactose testing

Hi there

My son is now 9 months old and has been on Nan lactose free milk since about 2 months. when on lactose free milk he is fine no problems, however we have tried on numerous occasions to change his milk to either another brand (not lactose free) and then he gets cramps and screams and is in a lot of pain. This also happens when he has yoguart and ice cream, anything with diary he has these symptoms. He has not been tested for lactose intollerant but this is the only milk he drinks that is ok, so we made our own assumptions.

My question is as follows, i want to have him tested, what if it comes out that he is not lactose intollerant, what could the other causes be. I read that it could be serious and one should have your child tested. We have asked our paed to test before but he has not done this so we want to do it ourselves at a path lab, but what if the outcome is he is not lactose intollerant.

I have been thinking of putting him on normal milk for various reasons, but am now concerned what effect this could have and therfore want to have him tested.

what is your thoughts on this.

It is almost certain that your son is lactose intolerant. He has the classic symtoms. You should have him tested for lactose intolerance. There is no hurry to change to another form of formula at 9 months. Let me know what the outcome of the test is and I will advise you further.
