Q.

Lactose intolerant

Dear Doc

How do you tell if a baby is lactose intolerant, my son is 14 months old and is on pediasure milk and eats full cream yoghurt. As soon as I introduce him to fresh milk he gets a runny tummy and bad nappy rash. Is it normal for the fresh milk to do this as when he has the yoghurt it does not upset his tummy.
Should I continue giving him the fresh milk, as it will only be used for his cereal and not his daily milk intake.

Thanks

It is very possible that your son is lactose intolerant. He can tolerate yoghurt which is fermented and acidified dairy and has less lactose, but is not completely lactose free.Use a soya milk on his cereal and see if he can tolerate this better.
